I often say things about “our” God, but recently, I’ve been thinking about how that suggests there are other gods, other people’s gods, in the same category with Him. While people do serve other gods, idols, putting things and people ahead of the one true God in their priorities, those are merely counterfeits, a Satan-placed substitutes, for God.
Jehovah God is simply God.
God’s name is Jehovah, I AM.
He is. It’s that simple. He just is.
No beginning or end. From everlasting to everlasting (Psalm 90:2). Infinitely in the past, and infinitely in the future.
He is not just our God but simply God, God of all.
I recently read that the Lord girded Himself: “The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength” (Psalm 93:1 NKJV). He clothed Himself, because no one else can.
When I read this verse, it made me wonder what else God did to/for Himself? After all, He alone is God. I found these verses:
- “And Abraham said, ‘My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.’ So the two of them went together” (Genesis 22:8). And, did He ever!
- “For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:13-14, 16-18).
- “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: ‘I am the LORD, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself’” (Isaiah 44:24). God made everything, and everything belongs to Him, including the earth and the people on it: “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1 NKJV).
- “I looked, but there was no one to help, And I wondered That there was no one to uphold; Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me; And My own fury, it sustained Me” (Isaiah 63:5).
- “‘“For thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out’”’” (Ezekiel 34:11. Yes, all those quotations marks are necessary!).
- “Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me” (Isaiah 45:21).
Why is Creator of all things and people, God of all things and people, King of all kings and people mindful of us, care about us, providing Jesus for us, searching for us and our prodigals? Because He wants to. He designed it that way. And, He doesn’t want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9). Isn’t that incredible news? He can do what He wants and plans, and no one and nothing can stop Him.
This is God to whom we pray, to whom we give our prodigals, in whom we place our trust: this Self-reliant, all-powerful, loving God!
He is worthy of our trust and our praise!
He is God.
“‘Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders?'” (Exodus 15:11).
