As someone who loves a prodigal, it can seem that each time forward motion toward salvation is made, there quickly follows at least a partial step back away from God, if not many. When we gain ground and see raindrops (evidence of God’s answering prayer), the enemy of souls comes against the progress with a vengeance.
BUT, it doesn’t have to be this way. We can combat this through prayer! When a victory comes, we immediately pray against Satan’s assault on our prodigals to protect them and keep them from moving away from God again.
Our God is stronger, mightier, and smarter than the enemy of souls, and He can stop the assault and cause forward motion to continue.
The Bible tells us that we have not because we ask not (James 4:2), and I have not always thought to pray against the “two steps back,” but I am now. I want only forward motion toward the Lord for our prodigals until they totally surrender their hearts and lives to Him, and that is His perfect will, too!
